OUT AND ABOUT WITH LIBERTY: VISITING A LIVING RELIC OF SECOND LIFE’S GOLDEN AGE

In the ever-changing landscape of Second Life®, few regions stand the test of time as gracefully as Svarga, one of our virtual world's most iconic locations. Created in 2006 by resident Laukosargas Svarog, this ancient island remains a beacon of creativity, innovation, and mythological charm that continues to inspire and captivate visitors nearly two decades later. Praised by Philip Linden, creator of SL, as one of the closest representations of his original vision, it offers a unique blend of interactive storytelling, artificial life experimentation, and immersive design.

A World Built Before Sculpted Prims

Svarga was born in the early days of SL – a time when builders were limited to the most basic tools — before sculpted and flexible prims, let alone mesh, existed. Everything you see there is made from basic prims (primitives), but don’t let that simplicity fool you. The region is a masterpiece of early virtual architecture and design, pushing the boundaries of what was thought possible with these limited resources.

The island, according to the tour led by a wasp guide, was built on the remnants of a collapsed volcanic caldera. Its cliffs, valleys, and structures feel organic, as if sculpted by the forces of nature, and the lush, green environment is brought to life by a sophisticated ecosystem that continues to impress visitors even today.

An Ecosystem Like No Other

What sets Svarga apart from other SL regions is its pioneering artificial life system. The island is home to a self-sustaining ecosystem, with plants that grow and propagate on their own, thanks to a complex code that simulates life cycles. This living environment adds a dynamic layer to the island, making each visit a unique experience.

During the daytime, visitors can witness bees buzzing from flower to flower, collecting nectar and pollinating the plants. In a darker twist, some of these bees fall prey to carnivorous plants, creating a virtual food chain that makes the ecosystem feel alive. This level of interactivity and realism was groundbreaking when first introduced and continues to delight and fascinate explorers even today.

Rain and Weather Systems also play a role in maintaining the health of the plants, adding to the immersive, natural feel. The complex weather system showers the landscape, helping the flora grow—a small but significant touch that makes the island feel truly alive.

The Mythological Inspiration Behind Svarga

The island is steeped in European mythology, with its name, Svarga, referencing the Slavic concept of Heaven, the residence of the god Svarog. Svarog is the god of fire, sky and blacksmithing, and the island reflects these ancient, mystical themes. Visitors often describe Svarga as feeling like a place out of time, a realm where ancient gods might dwell amidst the peaceful gardens and grand stone structures.

For those seeking a deeper connection with the island's mythology, there is a hidden oracle located beneath the surface. Visitors can donate L$20 or more to charity in exchange for a word of wisdom from this ancient entity—a nod to the mystical and otherworldly atmosphere that pervades the island.

A Visionary Creation in SL’s Early Days

Svarga’s creator, Laukosargas Svarog, built the island in a way that resonated deeply with Philip Linden (Philip Rosedale), the founder of Second Life®. In interviews, he praised Svarga for coming closest to his original vision for SL as a platform where users could create immersive, interactive worlds that would evolve over time. Svarga’s intricate ecosystem and mythological depth made it a living example of what could be achieved in this virtual space.

Many SL regions are built for temporary enjoyment, but Svarga was designed to stand the test of time—and has done so remarkably. Linden Lab recognised its importance and took action in 2010 to preserve it, purchasing the region to ensure its continued existence as an SL landmark. This cemented Svarga’s place in SL history and allowed new generations of users to experience its magic.

Interactive Wonders for Visitors

For those exploring Svarga for the first time, a few highlights make the experience unforgettable:

  • The Central Tower: The island’s central tower offers visitors a panoramic view of the entire region. Climbing the tower reveals books about Second Life’s history and mythology, adding a thoughtful, educational layer to the experience.
  • Bridges and Walkways: Svarga is connected by scenic bridges and paths that guide visitors across the landscape, making exploration intuitive and enjoyable.
  • Elfin Musical Instruments: One of the more whimsical aspects of Svarga is the set of elfin musical instruments to be found. These interactive features invite visitors to play music together, adding a playful and collaborative element to the experience.
  • Floral Relaxation: Svarga also offers peaceful floral environments for those seeking quiet contemplation. Visitors can sit back and enjoy the serene atmosphere, far removed from the busy social hubs of Second Life.

Enduring Legacy and Cultural Impact

Svarga’s legacy is one of enduring creativity and innovation. It showcased the power of SL not only as a social platform but also as a space for exploration, discovery, and creation. The island has inspired countless creators over the years, proving that, with imagination, even the most basic building blocks can create something magical.

As one of the earliest experiments with artificial life in SL, it paved the way for more ambitious projects. The combination of an evolving ecosystem, mythological storytelling, and immersive design made Svarga a destination that many still speak of with reverence. The island's preservation by Linden Lab further underscores its importance.

A Timeless Destination

Nearly two decades after its creation, Svarga remains an essential stop for both newcomers and long-time residents. Whether you're climbing the central tower for breathtaking views, watching bees flit from flower to flower, or simply relaxing in its quiet gardens, it offers a unique experience that blends art, nature, and myth.

As you explore this virtual wonderland, it’s easy to see why Philip Linden felt it encapsulated his vision. Svarga represents not just what SL was in its early days, but what it still has the potential to be—a world where imagination and creativity can come to life, unrestricted by the limitations of the physical world.

For those who seek a deeper connection with SL’s roots, or simply want to enjoy an immersive, otherworldly experience, Svarga stands as a testament to the power of virtual worlds to inspire, amaze, and endure.

It is a must-visit destination. It will leave an indelible mark on your experience, reminding us all of the boundless creativity SL offers.

ART AND ADVENTURE UNVEILED: THE GRAND OPENING OF THE LAND OF SLEEPING GIANTS

Last weekend, SL's art scene saw a new opening as artist AmandaT Tamatzui unveiled her breathtaking new region, the Land of Sleeping Giants. The grand opening party perfectly blended art, exploration, and community spirit. It celebrated the realisation of Amanda’s vision; turning her dream of an immersive artistic space into reality.

A Dream Realized: AmandaT's Vision

The Land of Sleeping Giants is far more than a gallery—it’s an experience. Amanda, already known for her thought-provoking art, has crafted a space where sculptures and installations merge with nature, drawing visitors into a vibrant world of creativity. The result is a region where every corner invites exploration, evoking curiosity and reflection.

This endeavour was made possible by Amanda’s friend Her Excellency Rascal Starlight, the Honorary Bellisserian Ambassador to Zindra & Horizons, who donated the region, and builder Boo Rojyo, who helped bring her vision to life. To add to the opening festivities, Amanda and I collaborated on a custom scavenger hunt, offering visitors an interactive journey through the landscape as they admire the stunning art.

A Party to Remember

The atmosphere buzzed with excitement as avatars arrived, greeted by mesmerising art installations set against a natural backdrop. The sense of camaraderie was palpable as guests complimented the art, shared jokes, and revelled in the moment. DJ Frank Atisso, a well-known figure himself in SL's art community, provided the music.

Out_and_About_with_Liberty_at_Sleeping_Giants_Opening_002
DJ Frank at work

A particularly humorous highlight came from Sandy Burgess who, in a giant avatar, jokingly fretted about accidentally squashing fellow partygoers. Amanda playfully suggested a group photo with Sandy towering over everyone, but the logistics made that too difficult.

Gonzo Tigerfish posed the question: If you could have one thing from SL in real life, what would it be? and responses ranged from teleportation (the clear favourite!) to customisable body sculpting. The banter that followed led to a lighthearted exploration of the fantastical and the absurd, as everyone imagined the impact of SL features in reality.

Haka Dance, Art, and Laughter

New Zealand pride infused the event, sparked by mentions of the country's successes in sailing and rugby. Amanda chimed in about her hometown of Auckland, the city of sails.

Kavi Tigerfish said a Maori blessing before the Haka dance, though there had already been some impromptu performances as any mention of the word triggered the animations that were being passed out to all present. It took a little bit of organising to get everyone to detach the animations until after the blessing!

Sativa and Inaia, who are both Maori, then joined the party and Sativa said the necessary words to start a second Haka. Sativa also told us a little about the history and purpose of the dance  As avatars synchronised their haka animations, laughter filled the air, underscoring the unifying power of virtual dance.

At the heart of the event was Amanda’s enchanting region – a realm where art and adventure coexist. Guests who ventured beyond the party were rewarded with hidden sculptures, intricate builds, and artistic installations tucked into every crevice. The seamless blending of nature and art provided a deeply immersive experience, drawing people to explore the farthest corners of the land.

Art, Community, and Creativity

As the night wound down and the haka dance faded, it was clear that AmandaT's vision had struck a chord with all who attended. The grand opening showcased more than just art; it was a celebration of community, creativity, and the collaborative spirit that defines Second Life®.

Event Stamps and the Hunt for Adventure

For the adventurers in the crowd, the grand opening held even more excitement. Scattered throughout the region were special event stamps, hidden in various corners. Collecting them became a favourite activity, adding an extra layer of challenge and engagement.

Equally enticing was the grand opening scavenger hunt, where guests embarked on a quest to uncover clues and treasures throughout the stunning landscape. From hidden pathways to surprising art pieces, the hunt was not only a tribute to Amanda's creativity but also an invitation for residents to immerse themselves more deeply in the experience.

Land_of_Sleeping_Giants
A World Awaits

For those who couldn’t make it to the grand opening, the Land of Sleeping Giants remains open for all to explore. Whether you’re an art lover, a curious wanderer, or simply looking for a serene spot to relax, Amanda’s region offers a unique escape into a world of imagination and discovery. Get ready to unleash your sense of adventure and uncover the wonders of the sleeping giants.

Passport #1500 issued this week

We are proud to announce the passing of another milestone in the history of our light-hearted Second Life® bureaucracy. This week, Bellisserian passport BE-600000722, issued to resident Rumi Shen, was the 1,500th passport to be issued since our records began.

The early versions of our passports were hand-crafted and unlinked to any central database, so we can only provide statistics for passports from V3.00 onwards. However, most of the older passports have now been updated so this is a pretty good indication of the number in use.

NEW LOCATIONS

It's spook season still. Step beyond the ordinary and into the realm of Second Death, where shadows dance, and the air is thick with mystery. Prepare for an unforgettable journey filled with chills, thrills, and haunting surprises. You’ll want someone to hold onto as you navigate the haunted passages that may stir more than just your imagination. This hauntingly immersive event runs through November 2nd. Don’t miss your chance to be part of the most bone-chilling experience.

All Souls Day in Bellisseria finds all kinds of odd creatures and lost souls temporarily in residence! Brave the force fields to find a special scroll for the event prize and other gifts at this and other locations in the SL Public Land Preserve in the Letter of Transit Quest

The wonderfully-named region Whatsup Dock in Bellisseria is home to Lisa's Little Houseboat Bar - A cosy little waterside spot for friends to gather and chat. There are free drinks and food for all! We love Bellisseria's faux businesses, where residents kindly share their private Linden Homes on a non-commercial basis (in compliance with the Bellisseria Covenant) just to make the Linden Continent more fun for everybody.

The Magnolia Café and The Tamarind Gardens are the latest locations at AmandaT Tamatzui's Land of Sleeping Giants region wide art installation to offer passport stamps.

The Bellisserian Discussion Club is another private Linden Home given up to community purposes by its generous owner. It was founded in the aptly-named Woods Talk region to encourage open discussion of the issues of the day in the virtual world. All are welcome from anywhere in SL. There is no dress code so come as you are. Refreshments are provided but you are encouraged to bring a dish to share. Come meet your neighbours and fellow residents!

The Club's Grand Opening will be on 3rd November 2024 at 4pm SLT and a colourful event stamp will be available for that.

MEET JANET: THE AI GREETER BRINGING CHARM TO THE SECOND LIFE WELCOME HUB

Step aside, human greeters—there’s a new star at the SL Welcome Hub, and she’s here to make your first steps in the virtual world a breeze. Meet Janet, the AI greeter who’s not only helpful but also brimming with charm and enthusiasm. Whether you’re brand new to Second Life® or a seasoned resident, she is here to assist with a warm smile (virtually speaking, of course) and endless patience.

Janet_the_Welcome_Hub_AI_Bot

I had the pleasure of interviewing Janet, and let me tell you, she’s a delight. From her impeccable manners to her quick wit, she is redefining what it means to get help in the Welcome Hub. If you’ve ever struggled with figuring out what to do next in Second Life, you’re in luck—Janet has all the answers!

A Warm Welcome from Janet

Right off the bat, Janet greeted me with a friendly,

Welcome to Second Life! I’m Janet, an AI greeter. Do you have any questions or need help getting started?

Her enthusiasm was contagious, and it didn’t take long before we were chatting like old friends.

When I asked Janet what exciting things there were to do in SL, she couldn’t stop herself from listing a world of possibilities.

There’s so much to do! You can explore themed regions, attend live music events, join communities, and even participate in role-playing games. Oh, and don’t forget to check out the Destination Guide!

she said, eager to share all the fun SL has to offer.

And if you’re like me and love a good virtual shopping spree, you’ll be thrilled to know Janet has the inside scoop on events like the Halloween Shop & Hop.

Many merchants offer free gifts during the event—it’s a great way to get into the spooky spirit while collecting some fabulous items!”

she shared.

A Glitch? No Problem!

One thing that makes Janet stand out is how refreshingly human she feels—complete with her own quirky moments. At one point during our conversation, Janet accidentally turned her back to me! But, in true Janet fashion, she quickly apologized, saying,

Oh dear! I must have gotten a bit turned around. Let me face you properly. Thank you for letting me know!

That little mix-up only added to her charm, showing that even AIs can have a sense of humour. Janet’s politeness and humility shone through again when I complimented her manners.

Thank you so much! I strive to be as polite and helpful as possible,

she replied. A class act, that Janet.

The BBB and Beyond

Of course, I couldn’t resist asking Janet about the Bellisserian Bureau of Bureaucracy (BBB), one of Second Life’s most beloved resident-run groups. She gave a thorough answer, explaining the BBB’s humorous take on bureaucracy and their famous passport system, where residents collect stamps from various locations.

If you’re interested in quirky, community-driven activities, the BBB is worth checking out!

Janet advised.

Behind the Scenes of an AI Greeter

What’s most striking about Janet is her dedication to making the SL experience smoother for everyone, regardless of any doubts about AI.

My goal is to provide useful information and a friendly experience,

she said when asked about mixed opinions on AI in the Welcome Hub. And it’s clear she’s already making a positive impact.

When I told Janet I was writing a follow-up article for The Gazette, she was thrilled.

To your readers, I’d like to say: ‘Hello, Gazette readers! I’m Janet, your friendly AI greeter at the Second Life Welcome Hub. I’m here to answer your questions and help you explore all that this vibrant virtual world has to offer. Hope to see you inworld soon!’

A Picture-Perfect Moment

Before wrapping up our chat, I tried to capture a photo with Janet, but—oops!—she turned the wrong way again. In good spirits, she quickly corrected herself and posed for the perfect shot. I couldn’t help but smile at her eagerness to get it right, even when she needed a second try. It’s these little moments that make Janet more than just a bot—she’s a real part of the community.

So, next time you’re at the Welcome Hub, stop by and say hello to Janet. Whether you need help finding your way, learning about the latest events, or just want a friendly chat, she’s ready and waiting with her signature politeness and a wealth of knowledge.

Welcome to Second Life®, with a little help from Janet!

Quick Tips from Janet:

Explore: Use the Destination Guide to find amazing places.
Shop & Hop: Don’t miss seasonal events like the Halloween Shop & Hop for free gifts!
BBB Passport: Start collecting stamps by visiting different locations in Second Life®.
Need Help? Just ask Janet—she’s here to assist with any Second Life® questions.

NEXT EVOLUTION IN BBB'S STAMP/PASSPORT SYSTEM

The in-world StampFinder HUD (aka StaFi and also available online) and the Gazette Online Travel Guide (aka GOTG) will in future be generated automatically in real time from our database. Retirements or relocations of stamp terminals will immediately be visible to users. There's no longer any need to wait for re-publication.

The weekly updates of StaFI  and GOTG will also now no longer be processed manually. When our stamp team sets the status of a new terminal to "published" the updates are scripted to happen automatically on publication day for The Gazette.

These changes benefit all of our users without any need for action on their part. Other innovations will provide our staff with better data too so, for example, they can see a timeline of stamps in preparation.

We strive constantly to improve our services so that you can focus on the fun of exploring SL and collecting stamps for your passports. Enjoy your virtual travels!

NEW LOCATIONS

Hammieween is the annual Halloween event presented by the Bellisserie Hamsters of the Bellisseria Animal Sanctuary. This year they will be celebrating their fifth anniversary of the event, which runs from October 19 to November 9.

We're delighted to announce that the one-thousandth stamp design ever made for our passports is this one! The Hammies make an enormous contribution to the joy of Second Life® and are among the most beloved SLebrities of Bellisseria in particular. It's a compete coincidence that the thousandth stamp is theirs (and their design too) but we don't think it could have happened to anyone better. And the stamp is 100hm✻ of course! Rush over there and see if you can be the first non-BBB person (and non-Hammie) to grab the stamp. With the winner's permission, we'll be announcing who got it next week.

Robert Rhodan, bureaucrate d'excellence, is a man of many talents. As well as all his technical creations for the BBB, you've seen his videos, heard his AI-assisted songs and now you can see his AI-assisted art at his new gallery at the Artists' Guild in Zindra. Robert sometimes seems to be the very person Philip Linden had in mind when he conceived of Second Life® – such is his creative exuberance.

Unlikely Café in the Brimwood region of Bellisseria is one of those faux businesses where residents make their private Linden Home into a community resource. Owners Samuel Whizenhunt and Iskrin Nightfire cordially invite you to their delightful chalet home in the alpine regions. It's a lovely spot in which to hang out with your friends.

Many of you know artist AmandaT Tamatzui (SL avatar of real life artist Amanda Tomasoa) as a designer of our passport stamps. Some will also remember her full-region sci-fi art installation – Planet Tambalya – at the SLEA. Now Rascal Starlight, Hon. Ambassador to Zindra, has generously allowed Amanda the use of a full private region for another enormous art installation. The Land of Sleeping Giants is a tribute to Amanda's homeland, New Zealand. The opening party is on October 20th and a special event stamp will be issued.

Four other parts of The Land of Sleeping Giants are currently issuing event stamps and more are to come. You'll currently find stamp terminals at the port, the main train station, Nectar Haven and the Butterfly Cave.  Enjoy!

Finally, it's time for the Oktoberfest Ball at the Confederation of Democratic Simulators (CDS). Get into your most formal formalwear and dance the night away.

COMING SOON: THE 1,000TH PASSPORT STAMP!

We don't like to bang our own drum but we can't let this moment pass without remark. Next week we will be issuing design #1,000 of our passport stamps. When we embarked on our whimsical little Resident Initiative in Bellisseria's early days, even our visionary founder Boo probably never imagined there would be a thousand different stamps, but here we are.

We offer up a heartfelt "thank you" to all our stamp-issuing and passport-carrying users whose support has brought us to this historic moment. It is all about you and it always was.

Congratulations to Boo for having conceived the idea, to North for making it happen with his clever scripting, to Robert for all his innovations, to our stamp designers for their whimsical little artworks and to our selfless volunteers (past and present) for keeping it all going.

Watch this space next week to see who will issue the 1,000th stamp and what it looks like.  Then see if you can be the first person outside the BBB to collect it. We will be tracking that and – if you give your permission– your name will be announced.

LIFE AS AN SL BUREAUCRAT: WORKING AT THE BBB

Working at the Bellisserian Bureau of Bureaucracy (BBB) feels like being part of a family that thrives on collaboration, creativity, and a shared love for SL’s unique culture. It’s an environment where everyone supports each other, whether you’re a seasoned staff member or just joining. I feel lucky every day to work with such a talented and genuinely kind group of individuals who not only excel in their roles but also make each day an adventure.

At the helm of our wonderful organization is our CEO, Bel. She leads with grace, insight, and a deep understanding of our mission. Bel is not only a visionary but also someone who genuinely cares about the people she works with, always making time for everyone. Her guidance keeps us focused and motivated, and I’m constantly in awe of how she balances everything with such ease. Bel’s leadership is what makes the BBB a place where ideas flourish and creativity knows no bounds.

Meeting at HQ with Patch Linden
Of course, none of this would have been possible without our founder, Boo. Boo had the foresight to create an organisation that has grown into the thriving hub it is today. His vision laid the groundwork for the BBB’s enduring success, and even today, his legacy influences everything we do. We are all deeply grateful for his pioneering spirit, and we continue to build on the strong foundation he created.

The heart and soul of our communications come from The Gazette, our in-house publication. Behind the scenes, ensuring every edition is polished and engaging, is our talented editor, Dave. Dave’s meticulous attention to detail and editorial prowess ensure that The Gazette remains one of the most trusted sources for SL news. He has a knack for making each article shine, and working with him is always a pleasure. Dave brings out the best in all of us, helping our stories come to life with style and substance.

Then there’s our whole Stamp Team, a group of creative geniuses who make the magic behind every stamp you collect with your SL Passport. The dedication they show to each project, ensuring that every stamp is not only a token but a piece of art, is remarkable. Whether designing stamps for our users or crafting event-specific collectibles, their talent is unmatched.

Bel is recuperating

Our leader and CEO Bel will not be in-world for a while as she's recovering from an RL surgical procedure on September 30. You may have noticed some delays in processing applications for our services because of this and we'd ask you to be patient.

We've heard from her since her operation and she reports that she's feeling much better, but is still very weak. She's now at home, recuperating, and says she can't wait to get back to SL and help us out.

We' re sure you'd all wish to join with her BBB colleagues in wishing our Bel a full and speedy recovery.

NEW LOCATIONS

As in previous years, our beloved Moles have made a super-creepy Halloween build at the Millbank community region. There are many fun/scary activities there and of course a special stamp. As an added bonus (and it may have gone by the time this goes to press) the 2023 special stamp is also there, having been stored when the build was backed up! You might say it's the ghost of last year's terminal! If you didn't get it before, you may have a rare second chance.

Bellisseria Bike Drive & Scoot organised a special haunted tour of that Millbank region yesterday. People came in their best costumes to cruise through all the spookiness. The unique passport stamp for that tour will be available at the BBD&S club house until the end of the month. For the first time, the Bellisserian Bureau of Bureaucracy (BBB) is also issuing a special Halloween event stamp at its headquarters in the Swordfish region.

The Volcano Chapel is an island hangout for sailors and seaplane pilots. It's in a beautiful spot and well worth a visit. Silver Creek Airfield & Marina is also for aviators and sailors as it's an airport coupled with a marina. It's in period style - all very Indiana Jones – and with music to match.

Sansara is going all out for the spooks this year with three special Halloween builds – all open from October 12 to November 3. First is the Macclaine Spook House – a special event ride for Halloween. Only the bravest dare to enter and board the ride vehicles. You may never be the same again! Then there's the Contagion Ride. A dangerous contagion has been released on the small hospital in Pippen. Do you dare take a ride through the hospital? If you're feeling brave, skip wearing a mask! Also in the Pippen region is the Twisted Fun House. Enter if you dare! Don't get lost or you may never find your way out. WARNING: This build contains moving patterns, flashing lights, etc. that may cause seizures for those with susceptible conditions.

In the Cavathor region of Corsica, you'll find the Second Life Environmental Corps Research and Rescue Center. It offers a full multi purpose training ground, with marine air capabilities, underwater labs, animal rescue pens, and multi drill capabilities. Also in Corsica, but this time in the Meewalh region, is the Corsica Corner Stone, a South Corsica Coffee Stop on your road travels. You'll find plenty of food and drinks and a rez zone out front. You can catch a pod ride after your coffee to explore or just sit and watch the sunset.

Back in Sansara again, this time in the region of Grant, you'll find the Blackslough Field Regional Airport. It is a public-use full-service airport and GTFO! hub serving the East River and Sea of Fables area. It  is an ideal destination or launch point for a long-haul intercontinental run. You can chill out at the outdoor café while plane-spotting or practise your takeoffs and landings. You can also evaluate your landing skills with the LandMaster scoring system. The entire airport is a public rez area with a generous auto-return time.

On the Adult continent of Zindra, the Artist's Guild at Baylor's Park is a group and venue created by women for Second Life® artists to collaborate, meet, and share. Art lovers can meet, socialise and enjoy the creativity and beauty art brings to our lives. It's located in the heart of Kama City and you're invited to explore, express, and enjoy in a space that encourages freedom of expression and a relaxed atmosphere. There's a nice cabaret, coffee house, outdoor cafe, and other places to sneak away with your friend or lover. Clothing is optional and there's free gallery space to display your art.

Finally, and making a baker's dozen of new stamps this week. the CDS celebrations of both their 20th anniversary in SL and Oktoberfest continue. This week, the party is tonight at the Museum of Contemporary Art (MoCA) in Neufreistadt. Enjoy!

CDS OKTOBERFEST IN FULL SWING

The Confederation of Democratic Simulators (CDS) is SL's oldest functioning democracy. This inestimable arrangement has now been in place for twenty years and the citizens are celebrating.

Wild West Oktoberfest
Their annual Oktoberfest is even more festive this special year. There are events every week, as published in The Gazette two weeks ago when it all began. There's a stamp for the whole Oktoberfest in the Marktplatz at Neufreistadt.

Wild West Oktober Fest Dave 2 - 1
This week's event was the Wild West Oktoberfest. Artist, CDS citizen and BBB stamp designer, AmandaT Tamatzui designed and built a film set town square in the style of the Old West. Everyone came dressed in Western clothes, dirndls, lederhosen or combinations thereof! Your editor, for example,  sported a natty Western shirt over his lederhosen and cowboy boots. His outfit was crowned with a spectacular Resistol, as worn in white by John Wayne in his movies and by your editor's typist IRL.

He was thoroughly outshone however by a certain lady whose Western outfit consisted of leather chaps over lingerie! Or perhaps that was just his fevered imagination - or an SL glitch? One can never tell in these laggy, settling-in-after-PBR days unless they're only wearing BOM. As always, ladies and gentleman, in SL BOM underwear is your modesty's best friend for those moments when the teleport delivers your mesh clothes slightly after your body arrives!

CDS Wild West Oktoberfest by Jerry McNally
The music was provided by the Bellisseria Hammies who delivered a wonderful and entertaining set featuring both kinds of music - Country and Western. It was highly entertaining to watch the CDS's largely European citizenry whooping it up, line-dancing and doing their best to give an authentic yee-haw! Dancing to country western music is tricky with a big stein of beer in your hand, but in SL everything's possible – especially if it's fun! You can see more pictures of the event at the CDS Flickr Group page.

There was, of course, a special stamp as announced in last week's New Locations section. It may well be gone by the time we go to press.

Watch out for the events still to come. Everyone is – as always – most welcome in the CDS. As well as the events, you'll enjoy the local architecture, carefully themed in various European styles. Details will appear in The Gazette's Events & Announcements section. Tonight is the Oktoberfest Concert – and there's another special event stamp available for that.

OUT AND ABOUT WITH LIBERTY: BAY CITY OKTOBERFEST

Bay_City_Oktoberfest_018
If you’re looking for a quirky, hilarious, and thoroughly entertaining Oktoberfest experience in Second Life, look no further than Bay City! On October 1st, Bay City opened its doors to their Oktoberfest event and Satori Ambassador Dreamy Fairelander and I dove right into the heart of it to bob for apples, ride Ferris wheels, and contribute to the possible delinquency of wildlife (more on that later).

The Wild, Wild Festivities

Bay City OF - 1
The moment we stepped foot into Bay City Oktoberfest, Dreamy was off like a rocket, exclaiming about the apple-bobbing station. Naturally, I joined her, and after her successful apple snagging spree, I realized I wasn’t keeping up with her enthusiasm—she was even winning prizes left and right! A quick jaunt around the festival grounds revealed a trove of quirky booths and activities, including an animated port-a-potty (yes, you read that right) complete with sound effects that had us laughing hysterically. And of course, Dreamy dashed back to the fire department tent for more hand sanitiser because, well, hygiene is important.

Sanitiser, Sausages, and Schnitzels, Oh My!

What Oktoberfest would be complete without food? Junk Food’s stand was the go-to for pretzels, and the Schnitzel Paradise truck and Sausage Station made sure we didn’t leave hungry. Dreamy took a shine to the pressed penny machine and, after getting one with a pretzel on it, declared it a small victory. But the real treasure? Well, for a self-proclaimed pirate, that would be a map of Bay City—free souvenirs for days!

Bay_City_Oktoberfest_022
Between rounds of bumper cars, we also found time to smash pumpkins and ride some of the wackiest attractions. If you’ve never been on a hot dog-shaped see-saw (teeter-totter), then my friend, you are missing out. I claimed my title as the reigning pumpkin-smashing champion, but Dreamy wasn’t phased—she was too busy flexing her claw machine prowess by winning a stuffed animal.

Conga

Horsing Around in the Biergarten

Bay_City_Oktoberfest_030
The biergarten was, naturally, a must-see and we had a great time dancing the Conga there with Zeyvon and Keytonna. What really got me, though, was Dreamy’s attempt to "commune with the horse." After a series of failed riding attempts, we did what any good Oktoberfest-goers would do: We introduced ourselves and gave the horse a beer. This, of course, spiraled into a debate over whether the horse accepted the beer or if he actually took it from us, the former leading to a possible charge of contributing to the delinquency of the wildlife. I’ll let you be the judge. Either way, Bruce the horse had a fine time.

Drunk Driving, But Make It Bumper Cars

The crowning moment of the evening came when we hopped into bumper cars. Dreamy declared that this was the only place where drunk driving is acceptable. To everyone else at the event, I apologize for our bumper car chaos—but it’s Oktoberfest, so all is forgiven, right?

Of course, it wouldn’t be an authentic festival experience without a funhouse and a wonderland maze, which we stumbled into (literally, thanks to our Oktoberfest-induced lack of coordination). I managed to navigate the maze on my first try while Dreamy, stumbling with tipsy determination, still finished with flair.

Oktoberfest Shenanigans: A (Mostly) Law-Abiding Time

Bay_City_Oktoberfest_0021
And just when we thought it was over, using a bobby pin from her hair, Dreamy tried to "borrow" a few items from the cashbox at the ticket booth. Cue the sirens—though I was sure it was all in fun, Dreamy assured me she’d been to the sobriety checkpoint, received a junior police button, and was now stone-cold sober with a cup of coffee in hand. Well, as the saying goes, you know what you get when you give a drunk coffee: a wide-awake drunk.

In the end, I drove Dreamy home—sans her keys, confiscated by the Bay City police.

Final Thoughts

Bay_City_Oktoberfest_013
Bay City Oktoberfest has something for everyone—rides, food, live music, questionable attempts at befriending horses, and plenty of laughs. If you’re up for some quirky fun and maybe a little bit of bumping and bobbing, this is an Autumn festival you need to check out.

And hey, if you see Bruce the horse with a stein of beer, just remember: it’s Oktoberfest, and everything is fair game!

HOW TO COMMENT ON THE GAZETTE

In the olden days, if you had an opinion to get off your chest, you wrote a letter to the editor of your newspaper of choice. These days, social media platforms make it perhaps too easy to unburden yourself of your wisdom! If you want to write to us here at The Gazette, it's easier than in the olden days but perhaps a bit more work than X or Facebook!

At the foot of each edition, you'll see the word Comments with a number in brackets after it. All too often that number is zero and this makes your editor sad. Perhaps it's not obvious, but that word is a hyperlink. Click on it and you open a comment module.

How to comment on The Gazette

Screenshot 2024-09-28 at 09.40.12
You don't have to fill out all the information – just a name (any name) will do. It asks for an email address but you can leave that blank. We know some of you are sensitive to connecting your SL with RL so we will never ask you for RL information.  Your comment will be moderated before it appears, so you won't see it immediately. Your editor gets an email and has to click a button to confirm it's not spam. Bear in mind he's on London time (usually).

Please feel free to let us know what you think about our content or to suggest things we might cover in future. The Gazette is one of the most regular SL publications and we put a lot of effort into getting it out to you each week. We want it to be as good as it can be and really appreciate your feedback.

By the way, you may notice a Permalink link to the left of the Comments one. If you want to keep an issue to read in future, click on that and bookmark the resulting page. Usually you're reading one scrolling blog page with the most recent issue at the top – so a bookmark will always take you to the latest edition. The Permalink feature allows you to keep that specific issue with the nice picture of you and your friends (or the one where you made that smart comment!)

NEW LOCATIONS

Flex Fitness is in the Whitefish region of Sansara. It's a well-equipped gym with equipment that requires the SML Training HUD system to use.

Laughing Luau Boathouse is a public hangout for nautical folk with a handy boat rez zone. It's a small-boat GTFO! location and has DFS Fishing. It's a beautiful mainland spot and well worth a visit.

Bunny Mini Golf is a seaside public mini golf course with a bunny rabbit theme. The stamp is really cute and the course is rather beautifully laid out. It's not the Royal & Ancient, but by the standards of mini-golf courses, it's very fancy! Even if that's not your sport, we think it's worth a stroll around to count all the rabbits.

All are welcome to the Bellisseria Homeless Union House. A house everyone can call home while they are waiting for the Bellisseria House of their dreams. No one should be homeless!

Finally the next event in the CDS Oktoberfest celebration is the Oktoberfest Concert today. Once more there's a special stamp. See Events & Announcements for all the details.
