A message from the CEO | SL20B: A look BBBack | Events & Announcements | New Locations

Screenshot 2023-07-13 at 09.51.01I am delighted by the participation in this years SL20B Event. I personally thank the BBB Team – the greatest team in SL –for all their hard work, including the laborious hours they put into its success. Amanda – who threw the parties and made all the stamps. Dave – who reset The Gazette I don't know how many times to include EVERY new stamp to be collected. Robert  – who fixed all my errors and mostly with a smile! Laurel – who worked overtime on passports, licences, and licence plates. Teresa – who had her own build at SL20B, but still gave us all she could.

I thank all the ambassadors for being so gracious with their time to be available for the collection of their personal stamps. And our construction team who created the most amazing build.

I am amazed at the participation of the Moles. Each year we are stronger because of their contributions. I also want to thank Patch and Strawberry for that amazing shout out at Lab Gab which skyrocketed things for us.

Mostly I want to thank YOU, our members,  who made us feel special and like we accomplished something truly amazing.

Last but not least, I thank our founder, Boo Royjo, for his dream of what could be.

We continue to grow and grow.  With this growth you will be able to experience some very new (for the BBB) and wonderful things to come. Much love and many, many thanks to all.

CEO Jezebel Bailey

We had a great time at SL20B. It was good to meet so many of our users. We give a lot of time to the BBB and such events are our best opportunity to get to know you – the people we work for. Thank you for all your kind comments.

The BBBack to Earth!! closing party was a great success. It turned out to be premature as SL20B was extended until tomorrow, July 16th, but we partied like there was no tomorrow!

© Adele Hegel

The Bio Dome Café aboard our SL20B Space Station was elegantly decorated by SonDee, Bellisseria's ambassador to the Gaetas. Knowing how much work she put into making it beautiful, it's a real shame her RL work kept her from the party. She's a naturally enthusiastic lady and would have loved to see it filled with happy dancers in futuristic costumes. We missed you, ma'am.

Screenshot 2023-07-11 at 22.58.49We were pleased Kady Linden and a labour of Moles came to join the fun and give our guests another chance to get their stamps. Yes "a labour" is the correct collective noun for moles or, in SL, a slabour!

The hammies once more brought a full 100hm of cuteness, dancing away in hamster-sized space helmets.

There are photos of the party in this album of SL20B images. Thanks to photographers Adele Hegel, AmandaT Tamatzui, Fuyuko Amano and Margo Heartsong for permission to feature their photographs in this issue.

More images can be seen in our Flickr group feed. You should also check out this 360º image of our party by Adele. Consultant to the BBB, Robert Rhodan, also made this amazing movie.

We thank the Lindens and Moles who carried our SSiDs (Single Stamp issuing Devices). They're busy people and it was good of them to volunteer to be stalked! We hope they enjoyed handing out stamps as much as we enjoyed questing for them.

The SSiDs carried by bureaucrats, diplomats and some Lindens and Moles were programmed to stop working at midnight SLT on the scheduled closing date. Bel emulated Foxconn again and rushed out replacements. So, even now, there's still a little time to get those stamps.

There was controversy about just how many stamps we issued and how long we kept making new ones. Hardcore collectors like to "get them all" and some of you put in a massive effort. The first (and so far the only) passport-holder to report collecting all the SL20B event stamps was Martina Voxel. Congratulations, Martina! Your enthusiasm as you bustled around in hot pursuit of Moles and Lindens, was a delight.

At the time of BBBack to Earth!! there were still two stamps not even Martina had managed to collect. So we placed those in the paws of bears at the venue, where they will remain until SL20B closes.

We were strict in limiting it to those two. We didn't want those who had searched so hard "in the wild" to feel cheated if we suddenly made it easy. Only those no-one had collected were made available. We think that was fair.

Stats may change by tomorrow's delayed close, but the twenty most collected stamps at the time of writing were:

20 most collected
20 most collected event stamps at SL20B / click to enlarge

The most popular was the SL20B Event Stamp – available throughout from the Shuttle Bay of the BBB space station. In second place was the stamp of the Dalek Alien Ambassador. The personal stamps of your Editor, Robert and Amanda were 3rd, 4th and 5th most collected. However many you got in the end, we hope you had fun.

Congratulations one final time to Second Life® for providing twenty years of opportunities for creativity, socialising and fun. The Lindens provide the landscape and the Moles provide the infrastructure but in the end SL is a gift from its residents to each other.

If you have one of our stamp terminals at your place and you're having an event there or would like to make any other announcement, just let us know and we'll be happy to feature it here. Please drop a notecard on the Editor Dave (Lord.Junibalya) in-world or use the Email the Editor link in the sidebar to send us your information, posters or photos.

Most collected Linden/Mole stamp of SL20B

Congratulations to Dion Mole. His was the most collected stamp issued by a Linden or Mole during SL20B. Our chief stamp designer, Amanda, will deliver this award to him in-world.

SL20B Stamps Poster V4

There's a little gift enclosed with the notices issuing The Gazette in-world this week; a poster-on-a-prim showing all the passport stamps issued at SL20B, including 3rd party exhibitor stamps, the event stamp and the personal ones for Lindens, Moles, bureaucrats and ambassadors.

If you don't receive your copy of The Gazette via in-world notices, you can pick up a copy of the poster from outside our office or (until SL20B ends) from outside the ticket office at our exhibit

We hope you enjoy displaying it on the walls of your SL homes. If you'd like to make your own poster in a different format, Robert's web page with the stamp images is here.

Stamp Errors on V3 Passports: An apology

Users have reported extraneous images showing up on their V3 passports such as the the one at the top right of the image below.

Screenshot 2023-07-11 at 20.49.08

This is entirely our fault and we apologise.

Members of staff made the mistake of using V3 passports to test new SSiDs and stamp terminals; forgetting that when a V3 passport is stamped, the image is added to our database. Our indefatigable tech consultant Robert Rhodan – to whom we are very grateful – spent ten hours on one day alone last week replacing such stray images with the correct ones.

If an erroneous stamp appears in your passport, please report it to any member of the BBB staff. It will be remapped so that the correct stamp appears. Thank you to those users who reported the errors and thanks to all affected users for their patience.

To err is human. Not to give a damn about it is bureaucratic. We're only playing at being bureaucrats and just can't master that indifference thing. So, once again, we're sorry.

Fireflies is a family-friendly scout troop. Activities include badges, fishing, games, movies, field trips and story times and everyone is welcome.

BBBlast Off!! on World Map

We were delighted to see so many of you at our BBBlast Off!! SL20B party last Sunday.

We maxed out the region so that, sadly, some people had to try repeatedly before they could join the fun. We thank them for their persistence and are glad they got to enjoy at least part of the event.

Our plucky little security droid collapsed under the strain of greeting so many visitors, so sadly we don't have full stats, but just look at those green dots!

DJ Frank Atisso put together a superb playlist of spacey music and our guests' sci-fi costumes were amazing!

We were delighted to welcome several of our beloved Moles to the party, as well as the Bellisseria Hamsters. The Hammies (as they are known) are such a phenomenon in Bellisseria that cuteness is now measured there in hammiemetres (hm). Tell a date they're 75hm and they'll be flattered. Tell them they're 100hm and (unless they're an actual Hammie) they'll know you for the fraud you are!

Most of the above photos are by our staff photographer, but we thank Martina Voxel for the external view of the party in full swing. We also thank reader Kamaitachi Karu 宰 (inumaster Karu) for these wide-angle shots emailed to the Editor.

Our very own Robert Rhodan and visitor Trippz both made great videos of the event. If you didn't come, they will give you an idea of what you missed. Robert's is below and Trippz’s can be viewed on YouTube.

Robert told The Gazette

Oh, what a party it was ! I am happy to have captured on video all the joy and liveliness of the visitors dancing the night away in our space station. What to me was so fascinating was the many avatar outfits shown off vividly in the video. This was a prime example of the imagination and creativity SL spawns in its residents. Kudos to Linden Lab (Lindens and Moles alike) for that. The amazing location set up by Amanda and Fen and the tunes by DJ Frank created a vibrancy reflected in much positive feedback, directly and via BBBUG, including widespread astonishment about the "lack of lag"

Despite chatter about the FPS (Frames Per Second) achieved by partygoers' various gaming (and non-gaming) computers, the region held up well. The traditional SL party slogan in the early days –Let's crash this mofo sim! –was remembered fondly by older residents but never came close to applying.

Several people also uploaded pictures to the BBB Flickr Photo Pool.

LFD BBB Hon Badge - 1Our thanks to Kyle W. Forrester (kylewforrester) of the Liberty Fire Department who graciously thanked us for the party by appointing us as honorary members. Here is your Editor, proudly sporting his new LFD cap badge. Badges are available to BBB staff on application to Dave (accompanied by a pint of beer) at the bar of The Drunken Mouse.

LFD Cap Badge

Thank you all for making it such a great evening. We are proud to have celebrated SL20B in such style! And, of course, thanks to Amanda for organising it all with assistance from Fen.

As Steve Jobs used to say, there's one more thing. We're going to do it again! See Events & Announcements for details and check your inventories for the invitation attached to this copy of The Gazette in in-world notices.

We love SLB events. The 20th was always going to be special, but we can honestly say it's been great fun. We appreciate that so many of you stopped by to chat with us, when you had so many wonderful choices as to how to spend your SL20B time.

Here is the latest report on the SL20B event stamps you've collected so far. The most popular is the SL20B event stamp itself. The second most popular is that of the Alien Ambassador Dalek aboard the space station. Modesty prevents your Editor from mentioning the third most popular stamp.

Mole-CartoonEven the most elusive stamp-issuing Moles have been successfully stalked by our intrepid users. We love your enthusiasm. You must be pretty charming in your stalking, because yet more Moles have asked for BBB SSiD Tablet Computers (bbbPads™) so they can issue their own special SL20B stamps. Chief Designer Amanda has been working furiously to design 65hm+ stamps for them. Our CEO Bel has churned out bbbPads as if she was Foxconn.

Eminent SL journalist Gemma Cleanslate, a long-time supporter who now scouts locations for us, has been granted her own stamp. Congratulations Gemma! The good news for frustrated collectors anxious to "get them all" is that Gemma works as an SL20B greeter, so should be easy to find.

Here are the new SSiD event stamps available. Happy hunting! Only four days to go!!

In other SL20B news, two charming visitors to our space station made a surprise philanthropic offer to the BBB. This should give rise to an exciting development Soon™. Discussions are under way as to the details but watch this space for news of a new venture into formerly bureaucracy-free regions of Second Life®. The Grid's apparatchiks are on the march!

The V3  passport introduced earlier this year has been a tremendous success for the BBB by the only measure we care about; the number of people having fun in-world with our products. It has been well received by users old and new. This graph shows excellent growth in the number of people carrying the V3 Bellisseria Passport in-world – and you can clearly see the SL20B effect! To be clear this doesn't even include V3 passports for Mainland Continents or the CDS. These are just the Bellisseria numbers.

Screenshot 2023-07-07 at 21.50.08It also shows how hard works. As well as reviewing applications and issuing passports, she – like her esteemed predecessors  – still has to verify that applicants live in Bellisseria (or are officially partnered to a resident) before delivering their passports to them.

That's because, while the production and issue of SL-Generic and Mainland Continent V3 passports is automatic, Bellisseria Passports are, as they always were, exclusive to avatars resident there at the date of issue.

The CDS also verifies residence in issuing its own V3 passports, which it administers independently using the BBB's technology.

We would never have been able to handle so many Bellisseria applications under the outdated Notecard system. Nor could we have issued so many new passports if they were still entirely hand-made.

Laurel's job has been made easier and her productivity enhanced by Robert's splendid work in moving the application process  to the web and (partially) automating the production of passports from the resulting data. Laurel told The Gazette

Without the great template PP system, I would never have been able to keep up with the demand, especially the day(s) I have over 30 requests to do. Thank you for being persistent, Robert.

We are grateful to Laurel and Robert for allowing so many more people to have fun with our passports and stamps, but this also results from great teamwork between them and North, who deserves full credit for conceiving and scripting the V3 passports and working with Robert on his subsequent innovations.

The tireless promotion of passports and stamps by Bel. The Gazette and our Hon. Ambassadors and the production of attractive stamps by Amanda (mostly) and (in the past and still, occasionally) Robert, have all played their part in this success story.

We always thought the V3 passport was a terrific upgrade and we are glad the stats suggest our users agree.

If you haven't already, you really should upgrade your passport to the fancy new Version 3. (If you hold a Confederation of Democratic Simulators (CDS) passport, don't worry – it has been V3 since inception).

This is what the old V2 passport looks like. When you run out of space on your Passport HUD, you have need a series of additional Visa HUDs. You can only wear one HUD at a time, so you never see all your stamps in one place. Your stamps are stored locally and are therefore vulnerable to being lost if you suffer a bad teleport immediately after collecting one.

Screenshot 2023-07-06 at 23.30.21
Screenshot 2023-07-06 at 23.30.21

This is what the V3 passport looks like.

Screenshot 2023-07-06 at 23.28.22

Notice the buttons at the bottom to turn the pages and the Minimise button top right. You have one passport HUD, which won't run out of space. You never lose a stamp in a dodgy teleport. If you lose or bork your passport, your stamps are safe in our database and will show up on your replacement.

Your editor is a citizen of Bellisseria, the CDS and the Mainland continent of Satori and can use all three passports interchangeably. His stamps show up on all of them. The new database can be used to generate all kinds of stats and reports. For example, using the StampsOnPP HUD available from BBB HQ, you can securely view your stamps on the web more quickly and easily than turning passport pages in-world.

When using the application form, please be sure to select Upgrade from the drop-down field (not New PP) before clicking Submit (see screenshot below). A few users have made this mistake and it results in a new V3 passport without the option to transfer stamps from your V2.

Screenshot 2023-07-06 at 07.44.37If you filed your Upgrade form correctly, you will receive a Reader HUD with your V3 passport, which will allow you to transfer the stamps from your old V2 Passport HUD and each of your Visa HUDs.

When migrating the stamps from V2 to V3 (a one-time chore) please follow the instructions included with your new passport carefully. The procedure of sitting on rezzed copies of your V2 Passport HUD and Visa HUDs to copy the stamps may seem comical but it's actually a clever way of imprinting your unique avatar ID on the stamps. Make sure you sit properly on each of your V2 HUDs in turn before you click the Reader HUD. You'll get progress reports in local chat.

After stamp migration is complete, flip a page on your new V3 Passport HUD and be patient. It will take a while for the migrated stamps to show up.

The StampsOnPP HUD will give a much quicker web page display of your stamps via the secure personalised link it announces in nearby chat. Please note it may not display your most recent stamps collected since the last database update announced in BBBug notices. Don't worry, those will show up later.

BBBack to Earth with the BBB

BBBack to Earth!! Party TextureAll good things must end, including SL20B, but we're not going to let this wonderful event go without saying a proper goodbye!

You are hereby cordially invited to BBBack to Earth!! – our closing party for SL20B

Join us in the BioDome aboard our Space Station at 1-3pm SLT on July 11, 2023 – SL20B's final day.

Please don't hate us but there'll be a further event stamp just for this party. If you can't make it, don't worry. It will be in place all day on the 11th.

Dress code: Homecoming from outer space (but remember – still in our fantastic future). So let's see your most futuristic fashion. Or come as you are and just have fun.

Error Correction

Occasionally, some stamps were released in a hurry and later corrected. "Early bird" stamp collectors will have the defective stamps. As this is an unacceptable situation, Robert Rhodan has created a transparent and automatic remapping of outdated to improved stamps for all affected V3 passports.

"Transparent" means passport holders need do nothing. After one or two days the corrected stamps will show up automatically in their passports as if by magic. For users of Robert's personalised StampsOnPP HUD web-based stamp list (HUD available from BBB HQ), and for his StampsOnPP-Maximum sortable list these improved stamps will show immediately.

Here are the replacements as of July 5th, 2023.

First this week is the station house of the Liberty Fire Department which featured in this week's BBBlast Off!! Party Report (above). The Fire Chief told The Gazette:

Liberty Fire Department has been around since 2016, and in its time has covered a number of airports and RP sims of all sizes. We currently cover the RP sim of Windsor NC, do patrols and respond to SAR calls at sea by both helicopter and boat.

Also in that same region is Club Lagune. Its management told The Gazette:

Club Lagune is in the family friendly RP SL Town of Windsor, NC. We are a MULTI-GENRE Club, and welcome everyone from all walks of life, be it human, furry, whatever. We ARE LGBTQ+ and Lifestyle Friendly, as well.

A pro tip if you're struggling to find the Liberty FD stamp terminal in Windsor NC, by the way. It has (like many regions) a forced landing point. So when you tp in you won't be near the destination. However, the red beacon world map places on the tp point will still be visible to you in world, so just head for that.

In Bellisseria Krista Oh has made a chill hangout place with games and fishing out of the backyard to her charming log home in rural Harriet Spring.

Also in Bellisseria, it's almost time for the tradition that is the Big Splash Adventure Oasis Water Park organised by the Bellisseria Hammies at the Fairgrounds. It's one of our favourite events so please check it out when it opens. Be sure to take along a carrot for the hammies, who are – remember – always a guaranteed 100hm on the hammiemetre scale of cuteness.

And one more thing... there's a special event stamp for the BBBack to Earth!! closing party for SL20B (see Events & Announcements above).

Even more stamps to collect at SL20B | Second Life® is still going strong | The most popular stamps at SL20B | Events & Announcements | New Locations | Corrections | A reminder about deadlines

We know our most enthusiastic passport holders are working hard to "get them all" when it comes to the special event stamps for SL20B. Every year there are easy stamps to get (your Editor's for example) and "rares" (e.g. our chief scripter North, who has been particularly elusive this year).

Our stats show that many of you are successfully tracking down the Lindens and Moles carrying SSiDs (our special BBB tablets that issue personal passport stamps). They don't hang around in any particular location and we don't get to alert you via group chat when they're available. So we know they present even more of a challenge than our ambassadors and bureaucrats.

It was already going to be touch and go whether anyone manages to get 100% of the stamps this year. We're watching your progress with interest. Frankly your Editor will be very impressed if any of you pulls it off.

Moles On Stage
Moles on stage; many with SSiD tablets

Especially as the BBB is now making it even harder. Below is a checklist of twelve new SSiDs issued to more of our much-loved Moles – the SL Residents who work in-world as contractors for the Linden Department of Public Works. Plus one issued to Derrick Linden, that should have been previously notified.

It may get harder still as the BBB has decided to grant all requests from Lindens and Moles for an SSiD. So there may be yet more, with the time to collect them dwindling as SL20B progresses.

If you are (like your Editor) what collectors call "a completist" we can only apologise for making your life more challenging. As for the rest of you, we hope you have fun trying to get them. Either way, good luck!

They said it wouldn’t last… boy were they wrong! When the Sansar project started, all sorts of people predicted the end of Second Life® with everything transitioning to Sansar. Linden Lab promised that it wasn’t giving up on SL, but you know how rumour mills are. Many panicked and did not take them at their word.

But they kept their word… something the folks at the Lab have a history of doing. Sansar got sold, but Second Life® remained strong.

Then Facebook changed their name to Meta and promised to revolutionise social media with their metaverse. People said the metaverse would be SL’s undoing. But it ran out of steam (as well as out of legs), and Second Life® is still picking up momentum.

Illustration for Teresa's Article
In fact, Second Life® is going stronger and stronger. Linden Lab offered a few Second Lifetime Premium (200) and Premium Plus memberships (20), and people flocked to them. Rumour has it that they sold out in minutes, even though they were very expensive. Second Lifetime Premium membership cost $749.00 US, and lifetime Premium Plus cost $1749 US. It takes over seven years just to “break even” on those fees. Yet people flocked to spend that kind of money, showing that they love and value their Second Life® experience. They must be convinced SL will be around for a long time – and. believe it strongly enough to back their belief with cold hard cash.

Linden Lab is also busy developing new features for us. Some of them are still deep dark secrets but others we now know about: like PBR (nicer materials and reflections), the mobile viewer, etc.

They just released another Bellisseria homes theme – the 2048m2 Ranch Home theme for Premium Plus members. They claim to be working on at least two more new themes. They just released a new central Community Hub area for new residents to arrive in and for the rest of us to enjoy. It has an excellent representation of many aspects of SL. They have brought back mentors and already have a large trained team. They have a new contract with Motown Records and a whole region in which to enjoy their music.

So much is going on and will continue to do so.

Yes, Second Life® is alive and thriving. I believe it will be around for a long time to come.

Robert Rhodan has been up to his old tricks: extracting interesting stuff from our databases. Those carrying SSiDs at SL20B were disappointed our stamp-issuing tablets didn't have last years functionality of reporting how many had collected our stamps. It turns out Robert has all that info and here it is

As at the time of writing, the most popular stamp is the SL20B Event Stamp itself. We've been issuing SLB event stamps since we were founded and have always been happy to host the stamp dispenser on our stand. This year it's on the deck (which doubles as a dance floor) in our space station's shuttle bay.

© SilenzZz

Surprisingly, the second most popular stamp so far is that of Diplomacy Dalek; the alien ambassador in the Embassy of the Future. He declined to carry an SSiD tablet in case it got in the way of his gunstick (death ray). So he has his own stamp dispenser nearby, which – unlike the SSiD's of the human ambassadors – is available 24/7.

As their foreign policy is quite literally genocide of all non-Dalek races, it's perhaps surprising Dalek diplomacy is having such success. CEO Bel passed The Gazette a copy of this alarming selfie with the Ambassador taken by a couple of our visitors!

This, despite his occasional random use of his gunstick to

It rather reminded your editor of Darwin Awards-contenders trying for selfies with bears at America's National Parks!

Patch and Strawberry Linden gave us a great big shout-out at the LabGab Live Special interview last Monday. Before making a series of fascinating announcements (new Linden homes on 2048 sq metre plots, SecondLifetime accounts and more), Patch said;

These tablets are from the BBB – the Bellisserian Bureau of Bureaucracy. They have their passport-stamping system and we have our own personal passport-stamping stations that we can carry with us in these handy little tablets. Unfortunately they're not working at the moment because we have various scripting controls and such in place in-world but what we will do right after the show wraps up is Strawberry and myself and others who have them will start circulating through the audience regions so you can click our tablets and get our stamps.

After the event, Patch, Wendi and Strawberry mingled with the crowds to allow our passport holders to collect their stamps and this generated a lot of interest from the enormous crowd. Strawberry asked your editor for a briefing so she could answer all the questions she was getting about passports. He gave her the SLURL to our SL20B build and a link to The Gazette so she could send the enquirers to us.

If you missed the LabGab Live event you'll have to watch out for the stamp-issuing Lindens and Moles at other SL20B events. You may have to get over your shyness and slide into their IMs! Ask for their bear while you're about it.

Your editor, as usual, is among the stamp-sluts of the team. He has been parking his avi in-world while he sleeps on London Time, so users in the Americas can get his stamp in his typist's absence. You can usually find him by the Event Stamp terminal in the Shuttle Bay or in the Bio-Dome Café aboard the space station, sometimes resplendent in his Dress Teals (the dress blues of Sci-Fi).

He does hope to meet more of you in person though. It's always invigorating to meet readers and hear that our work here is enjoyed.

For example, every Saturday morning now, as he hits the publish button, he will be thinking of a certain user in one of his favourite parts of the world – the Scottish Highlands – who reads The Gazette with her morning coffee every week. (Hello there! Whit like are ye?)

Please consider using the comments function to let us have feedback all year round. It's great to hear from you in person at SL20B but please let us  know what you think of our efforts each week.

Happy SL20B and see you in Outer Space soon. Please check out the Events & Announcements section for what should be an excellent stamp-gathering opportunity and a fun social event aboard our SL20B Space Station!

If you have one of our stamp terminals at your place and you're having an event there or would like to make any other announcement, just let us know and we'll be happy to feature it here. Don't forget to collect the special SL20B stamps at the embassies and BBB HQ

Do not forgot to visit the embassies and BBB HQ as they all have a special SL20B Event Stamp that will disappear on the 12th of July!!!

All the locations are in the sidebar to The Gazette

We've had a run of fuel stop passport stamps lately. This week there's another small roadside gas (petrol) station in Jeogeot for the weary traveler and GTFO enthusiast.

We also have two new locations in the charming village of Icewater in Sansara. The first is a very romantic little wedding chapel and the second is a mini golf course.

A passport stamp is also now available when you visit the Tafler Gallery of Erotic Art (warning: very adult content) in Zindra. Our staff photographer's maiden blushes were quite something to be seen after her visit.

Finally, our very first Ranch Home location in Bellisseria! This is a public Teegle-owned ranch with horse-rezzer, games, and a hangout zone as well as a nearby vehicle rez zone to trail ride with your friends.

Enjoy visiting them all and do say hello to the owners if you run into them.

Thanks to our regular reader (and respected SL journalistic colleague) Gemma Cleanslate for pointing out that the SLURL to the Sea of Fables Info exhibit at SL20B was somehow corrupted in the edition-before-last of The Gazette. There is no-one we'd be less happy to disappoint than our valued colleague and regular Gazette contributor Teresa Firelight, whose exhibit this is. We apologise for the error and for the inconvenience caused to Teresa and to all our readers looking for this location. Here is the corrected entry. Please pay a visit.

We welcome contributions to The Gazette, whether they are articles, photographs or items for our Events & Announcements section. Your editor sets aside time for his SL job each Thursday to allow time for fact-checking and last-minute corrections on Fridays. So the deadline for submissions is 00.01 SLT on Thursday.

We will always try to be accommodating about last-minute submissions but if (as has been happening of late) everything arrives at the last minute – or if we're told about a story and not given key information so we have to chase it up – the whole thing stops being a labour of love and becomes a pain in the ample editorial arse.

Please bear this in mind and do your sincere best to respect the deadline. Thank you.

SL20B is underway! | Second Life Hub | Events & Announcements | New Locations

Along with many other SL groups, creators and designers Bellisseria's bureaucrats, consultants and diplomats are waiting to meet you at Second Life's 20th Birthday Celebrations. Our build is in keeping with the futuristic theme of the event. It's a space station, accessible by rocket shuttle from our surface location; BBB Liftoff at SLB Delightful.

Get a free ticket from the machine in the ticket office on the surface and then take the access bridge to the launch pad for the red rocket shuttles to the space station. Right-click and board to take the trip to space. The flight is fully automated, so relax and enjoy the ride!

Please use "shared environment" as this will allow you to experience the transition to outer space as you leave the atmosphere. We suggest you use mouselook. If you have a reasonable draw distance set you'll get glimpses of the space station as your shuttle flies above the space lanes before firing manoeuvring thrusters to line up for landing. You will see other space craft flying around the station, but never fear – your shuttle's computers will steer clear.

Don't worry about space suits. You will land through a force field inside of which there's full life support and artificial gravity. Feel free to explore the shuttle bay (which doubles as our events space for parties) before using the stairs to make your way through the door to the elevator.

If you are an SL Time Lord, BBB Space Station will show up on the navigation database for your Hands of Omega and Novatech Tardises during SL20B. Some Time Lords have already landed there only to be stuck inside because access to the whole of SL20B was blocked until the official opening. It must have been frustrating to see our space station on your view screens, but not be able to step outside! Your Tardis doors will now work if you try again.

However you arrive on board, timezones permitting, there will be as many of our team members around as possible to guide you, answer your questions or just hang out with you in the cafeteria in our station's bio-dome. When it's time to leave, please make your way back down to the shuttle bay to take one of the blue rockets back to the surface.

Here are some pictures taken during the space station's construction, which we were not allowed to share until SL20B officially opened.

We announced a shedload of new stamps associated with the event last week and you probably thought that would be it. In surprise news however, several of the Lindens and Moles will also be carrying SSiDs at SL20B. These will be rare stamps as they won't be staffing any stands. You'll just have to take your chances of getting one at the events they attend. If you pluck up the courage to ask for their bear, you can also ask for their stamp!

You can find details of the various LabGab Live Specials during SL20B (and the official Calendar of all SL20B events) here.

Finally, here's your checklist of Linden/Mole stamps to collect – as of today.

Enjoy your stamp-collecting!

Hold on to your hats, Second Life. Community just got a huge boost. It happened on Tuesday June 22nd.

There is a new central gathering area called The Hub. It consists of nine regions and tries to encapsulate a lot of what Second Life® is about. Brand new users will first rez there, but older residents are most welcome too. No more segregation! If you have a new friend who you bring to SL, you can now join them right away and help introduce them to Second Life®.

The centre region is called the Welcome HUB. It has an orientation area where new residents land on their first rez. There are a lot of helpful learning stations but they are optional and can be accessed anytime. There is a large social area called the Social Plaza where people can meet and socialise. There is a Second Life Academy with many great how-to stations on topics like: avatar appearance, improving viewer performance, how to use music and media, games, building and content creation, finding things to do and how to get SL support when you need it. Some of us older avatars may want to brush up on these topics as well!

Hub Map
There are also fun things to do, like shoot yourself out of cannons to teleport to other regions. There are other fun transportation goodies sprinkled around the other regions too.

Did I mention that there are mentors? The Second Life Mentors are available on eight of those nine regions and can help old and new avatars alike with their basic how-to questions. And there is a region called Land and Linden Homes that has BelliHub Mentors who are specially trained to answer questions about Linden Homes, Premium Accounts, owning Mainland, etc. (You can also find the Bellihub mentors at the BelliHub and BelliDemo areas.)

The other eight areas try to cover things that people do in Second Life. One of those regions is called MoTown, and has great music from the Real Life company Motown Records. There is a large area for dances and live performances. Another of those regions is called Laser Tag (I will let you guess what you do there). There is a region for Cinema and a region for Skilled Games and a region with a for fun Casino. There is a Shopping region where each store offers a free gift you can pick up as well as goodies to purchase. There is a sandbox region, and it even has a little classroom. I don't know of any building classes yet, but I would not be surprised to see some in the not-distant future.

My favorite HUB region is Land And Linden Homes. It has a demo for each and every style of Linden Home, with a controller to rez each type of house offered in that style. It also has a train station with a track running to a Log Home region. I haven't seen trains running yet, but expect them soon. This region also has general information about premium memberships, owning mainland, private regions, etc.

The Hub doesn't cover everything there is to do in Second Life. It is pretty quiet on things like Adult activities, places to explore (forests, lakes, museums, art galleries), role play, special interest clubs and communities etc. There is just too much in Second Life to represent it all in just nine regions.

Overall, the HUB does a great job of representing our virtual world. It is beautifully decorated, has tons of fun stuff to do and gives people a great feel for many of things on offer. I strongly recommend you visit it, starting with the Welcome Hub.

SL20B Exhibitor Showcase

Not that there aren't other events in SL at present, but they are pretty much overwhelmed by the big one. Yes, SL20B is here and not just twenty years of our virtual world, but "our fantastic future" is being celebrated.

The Gazette has no intention of rivalling those mainstream channels of SL communication currently bombarding you with information about this momentous event. We'd just like to say that you can find full information on the exhibits at this years SLB celebrations here. And the full official schedule of events is here.

We look forward to seeing you at our own SL20B location.

Happy Birthday SL!

Tolsen's Gas-N-Go! is a great little gas/petrol station located on Route 10 in Mangyeong, Jeogeot. It's an official GTFO Hub and a proud supporter of The Drivers of SL. Pick up a free ice cream or a fresh copy of The SL Newser while you are fueling up.

Happy 20th Birthday Second Life® | Out & About: The SL20B builds in progress | Stamps to collect at SL20B | Events & Announcements | New Locations

Happy 20 Birthday SLCan you believe that it has been 20 years – and Second Life (SL) is still going strong! OK, technically SL turns 20 on June 23, 2023. But we are starting the celebration a tad early and celebrating for … get this… 20 days!

The SL20B event is a twenty day celebration of Second Life’s 20th birthday. And a LOT of celebrating is planned!! Some Lindens and Moles will give talks we can attend (and even ask questions). Those meetings are always fantastic – as well as popular. They tend to fill up so be sure to come early!

There will be almost nonstop entertainment for those 20 days… live singers, dancers, DJs, etc. There will be shopping – 400 general stores and 80 adult ones. AND each of those stores will have a gift for you. In addition there will be community exhibits .. over 300 general ones and 34 adult ones.

Many of the exhibits are amazing, and I dont want to give away too much about them before the event opens. However, if you would like to know more about Second Life’s History, I recommend that you check out the Second Life, The past, the present, the FUTURE exhibit which will be located here. [Please note the link will not work until the SLB regions are officially open.]

Patch linden framed

I was able to catch up with Patch Linden, VP of Product Operations and ask him a couple of questions about SL turning twenty. Let me share what he said:

Q: What do you personally feel are a few of SL’s most important achievements over these past 20 years?

Patch: There are many to chose from. Starting with user created content, which is what has enabled Residents to build anything their imaginations desire. Our virtual economy is unlike any other platform in how it has allowed Residents to transform their passions into businesses. Charities within Second Life such as the American Cancer Society or The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research and the communities that have been built to support them. The technological advancements of being a pioneering virtual world and all of our achievements over time have never been successfully replicated. And of course, the Residents who make up this vibrant and compelling virtual world we inhabit together.

Q: What are a few of thing things you are most excited about going into this SL20B Celebration?

Patch: Overall, I can't wait to reveal several items we have in store for everyone. This year is a huge milestone for Second Life and turning 20 years old. That's two decades of our virtual world and to rise to that momentous and honorable occasion, I think we have some really compelling things to speak to, as well as taking our time to reflect on the past, embrace the present and envision the future. Did I mention Second Life Mobile? Stay tuned...

Q: What is your advice to people coming to the SL20B event?

Patch: Be prepare to be amazed by: Our Fantastic Future! Make sure you attend the opening ceremony speech on June 22 at Noon SLT, and Meet the Lindens throughout the week starting on June 26 at 2pm SLT Monday through Friday.

The Meet the Lindens talks will be held here, but – again – the link wont work until the event opens on the 22nd.

When I imagine a space ship, I see a clean, perfectly-engineered machine without a surplus ounce of weight. Others picture a battered, precarious craft derived from dystopian sci-fi.

SL20B's theme of "Our fantastic future" has inspired SL creators to make many spacey objects – from Star Trek sparkly to Star Wars grungy and everything in between. Including, as always in SL, more cyberpunk and steampunk than you could shake a lightsaber or a walking stick at.

BBB Space Ship @ SL20B_001
BBB space ship over SL20B

As a child, I pictured 21st Century life as being something like The Jetsons. The joke with that show, of course, was that its imagined future was essentially the same as the writers' present. All the important things like family, romance, school, friendship and work were just like the 1960s.

The writers didn't foresee, for example, that the role of women in the future might change so dramatically. Yet that has perhaps been the biggest change of my life – to my delight as a father of daughters.

In general we humans treat each other very differently than we did in my youth. Mostly that has been a good thing.

Though I know SL20B is a party, not serious futurology, it made me wonder –  as I smiled at my fellow-residents' wacky ideas – if our real future will be as different from today, as today is from our past. Not just in terms of technology but as to how we relate to each other as humans.

As usual, there will be a commemorative stamp for the SL20B event itself, which runs from June 22nd to July 11th. The stamp will be available at BBB Liftoff in the SLB Delightful region (NB the link will not work until SL20B opens). Please take a rocket shuttle to find it.

As in previous years, our bureaucrats and diplomats who attend the event will also be carrying tablet computers called SSiDs (Single Stamp issuing Devices) to apply their own personal stamps. Just click on their SSiD while wearing your passport and the stamp will be applied. Please don't just click and run though! Firstly, it's polite to ask and secondly we love to chat. The alien ambassador of the future is also issuing his own stamp, but not from an SSiD. There's a terminal near his position.

Here's a checklist for you to to print out and use if you want to be sure to collect all the personal stamps.

Screenshot 2023-06-13 at 12.08.17In an innovation for this year's event. – because SL20B is such a significant anniversary in the history of Second Life® – BBB HQ and each of Bellisseria's Embassies to the Mainland Continents of Second Life® will also issue limited edition commemorative passport stamps. Some of those (whisper it softly) are already available.

They can be collected at HQ and at the embassies themselves. There are SLURLs to all those locations in the sidebar to The Gazette and visitors at SL20B can use our teleporter there to visit them.

Screenshot 2023-06-15 at 05.36.44Other exhibitors are also issuing their own SL20B event stamps this year – watch the regular New Locations feature for details. So there are more to collect than ever before at a single SL event!

Please don't forget to bring your passport and enjoy collecting them all.

If you have one of our stamp terminals at your place and you're having an event there or would like to make any other announcement, just let us know and we'll be happy to feature it here. SL20B opens next week

This is the last edition of The Gazette before the big birthday party begins. Yes, Second Life® – our beloved virtual second home – is twenty years old. The Grid that opened back then had fewer regions than the Lindens have set aside for the 20th birthday celebrations, but it was the beginning of the metaverse we know today.

The party begins next Thursday, 22nd June. It will continue until Tuesday 11th July. It will include the usual Shop and Hop retail regions but as always the main attraction will be the resident exhibits on this year's theme Our Fantastic Future.

Watch this space as SL20B proceeds for the BBB's programme of events there as well as events organised by our passport stamp-issuing users.

Bellisseria Passport Redelivery Service Open

The new service announced last week, whereby holders of lost or damaged Bellisseria Passports can securely obtain a replacement, is now operational. Here's an explanatory video.

The service can be accessed at BBB HQ.

You won't be able to access them until SL20B is open to the public but – apart from the main event stamp there will be at least three other event stamps there. Corsica South Coasters, Sea of Fables and SL's oldest democracy - the Confederation of Democratic Simulators –  are all represented. Be aware that, while the SLURL for Sea of Fables Info will put you on a dock, you will need to get wet to collect the stamp!

And, of course, the SL20B stamp itself – available, as at the last two SLB events, at the BBB location. As with all of our exhibition content this year, you'll need to take a rocket shuttle to get to it. Our build on the surface consists only of a ticket office and launch pads, set in a garden of alien plants.

SL20B | New Passport Tech | Events & Announcements | New Locations

It's hard to believe our virtual world is two decades old. Twenty years ago the initial Second Life® was smaller than the area set aside this year for its 20th Birthday celebrations!

SL20B begins on June 22nd and continues to July 11th. Of course no other metaverse has Second Life's storied past, but the theme for this year's celebration is "the Future." We have embraced that with enthusiasm. Whatever humanity's future has in store, we're confident bureaucracy will be part of it!

Work is underway on our SL20B build, which must be completed for the Moles' inspection by no later than June 14th. The construction team is led by CEO Bel, assisted by Boo Royjo, SonDee Batista-LeFevre, AmandaT Tamatzui and the ghost of our late editor, Fenella Allen.

We can't tell you much about it and we're forbidden to show you photos of work in progress, but we can tell you that all the information about our activities will be accessible only by rocket ship. Oh, and here's a little picture clue.

We can't wait to welcome you when SL20B opens. The staff of the Bellisserian Bureau of Bureaucracy, the Corps Diplomatique of Bellisseria and the passport officials of the Confederation of Democratic Simulators all look forward to spending time with you at the event. We love meeting the people our efforts all year are designed to entertain.

As in previous years, staff will carry SSiDs (Single Stamp issuing Devices). These are special tablet computers, which allow us to check your passports and apply our own individual stamps especially designed for the event. Will you be the first to get them all?!

In the past we used SL notecards to gather the data we need to issue a Bellisserian Passport. A hard-working bureaucrat then prepared each one by hand, after verifying by a home visit that the applicant was qualified. The application notecards ended up in the inventories (or the trash folders) of our staff, past and present, so there was no structured record.

There was a clear need for innovation to make things work more smoothly.

To achieve this Robert Rhodan expanded the passport database built by North Crannock to serve our latest Version 3 passports and created a new set of tools. The first of these is a modern web-based application form, which is much easier for passport applicants to use. This allows us:

  • Automatically to store applicant data in the expanded database, and
  • To have passports made automatically based on the database information
  • To offer a lightning-fast, sortable online display of each user's stamps, with privacy access protection (the StampsOnPP HUD)
  • To offer a sortable list of all stamps and stamp locations with SLURLs, active and retired (the StampsOnPP_MaximumList)
  • To provide an anonymised list of stamp collectors ranked by the number of stamps collected, so users can see where they rank.

The new technology also allows us to offer a self-service redelivery terminal for users in case they lose or bork their passport.

As the old data sent in via notecards is lost, you will be asked to supply some information again when you apply to upgrade your version 2.00 passport (use the drop-down option).

The new self-service redelivery terminal, which will be available Soon(™) at BBB HQ will restore automatically any passports that were issued or upgraded via the web-based form. It will also ask you to re-enter some data if your original passport application was by notecard. Either way, your data will then be stored in our database, so you won't ever have to do it again.

You don't need to bookmark all the links in this article, unless you want to. You can obtain them again from the terminals and dispensers at BBB HQ. If you'd like to see a demo of the tooling for the new system you can view it here

One final point. Only data entered by the applicant on the web-based form is stored. It is solely used for issuing and reissuing passports.

We hope you enjoy the added convenience and extra features of our updated systems.
