This past weekend was an important milestone in an amazing love story. This is the story of how important relationships can form in Second Life, and how they can transition into Real Life. It is the story of happiness and personal fulfillment. It is the story of how people can find their Real Life soul mates in Virtual Reality. It is the story of a “dream” wedding.
Riot and Kalia
It is the story of Kalia Anatine and Riot Hax.
The story began over 14 years ago when Kalia and Riot met in Second Life (SL) and became friends. Before long, they knew that they were made for each other. With the exception of a single camera session and an exchange of Real Life (RL) photos, all of their interactions were on SL.
Then about a year later, on October 8, 2008, Kalia moved across the country to Riot. The relationship they had formed in SL held up and continued to grow and mature. They were a couple in both SL and in RL.
Kalia and Riot saw a lot of people get married in SL and then a few years later break up and go their separate ways. But any type of marriage – SL or RL – was not something that either of them was willing to take lightly.
They finally got married after 14 years of being partnered in SL. During this time, they gathered a strong circle of family, friends, and Bellisseria neighbors in their SL lives. Second Life had become a magical place for them. But in all this time, Riot had not yet asked her to SL marry him.
One of Kalia’s talents is building wedding venues for others. One day she was working on one of these venus and mentioned to a friend that she thought it “funny” that in 14 years of SL partnership, Riot had never proposed to her.
What happened next is best told from the couple’s own words:
“When this tidbit of information was whispered into Patch Linden's ears, he would not stand for it. He had a very public talk with Riot – shouting his name and demanding a Mouse to Man talk on the spot. After being called out, Riot stood up and asked Kalia to marry him in every Bellisseria group they shared. Knowing that Patch was a good and magical mouse, he thanked him for forcing his hand and asked Patch to be his Best Man. The Mouse agreed and then got an idea that only Magical Mice could conceive of -- their wedding was the perfect event for the release of the new region. So, with the twitch of his whiskers and swoosh of his tail, Patch the most magical of mice made it happen.”
And so, two important things were coordinated together into a breathtaking single event – possibly the “event” of the year. The new Bellisseria Fantasy Community Center Region was released – a stunningly beautiful area for all SL residents to enjoy… AND … Kalia and Riot finally had their “Dream” fantasy wedding.
An incredible amount of work went into making this happen. Moles and Lindens worked hard to make the most beautiful community center that SL had ever seen – and to coordinate its release with the wedding. And tons of preparation and work went into making the wedding happen, including planning, setup, and rehearsals.
It all came together on November 6, 2021. The new Bellisseria Fantasy Community Center Region opened to the public at 11 AM, and the fantasy wedding began at noon. There was a celebration and party lasting until 5 PM with music by three talented DJs: Shamu, Far, and Katie. The guests got to take part in the wedding by being the flower bearers… each holding an animated branch to honor the bride as she walked down the aisle. After the ceremony, guests could dance, walk around the stunning grounds, enjoy a beautiful boat ride or rez a horse to explore.
The wedding venue stayed up through the weekend so that those unable to make the ceremony could see and enjoy the stunning venue.
Mr. and Mrs. Riot and Kalia Hax
When asked about it, this is what the couple had to say: “We were humbled and honored to share our day in this way."
A beautifully written article, Teresa. And gorgeous photos. Thank you for your hard work on this feature.
